Social Marketing – How Much is Too Much?
It’s been the rage for quite a while now. Practically everyone you’ve ever known, need or want to know is available through some social networking portal. For the longest time, it seemed like the practice was focused on purely social connections, mostly involving kids and young adults. Suddenly, the potential began to grow and light bulbs began to light up over the heads of marketing executives worldwide. Now that social networking is firmly ingrained in the world of communication, it has become important to ask: How much is too much?
I’m not talking about time spent, although it’s easy to see how that could turn from work or play into a full blown obsession. Rather, it’s the amount of information that is being put out into cyberspace that has some people crying “foul!”
Social networking is a good tool for business if used properly. However, if too much information is put out there about your personal existence, habits, schedules, etc., it may be that you are simply asking for trouble. In a time when many people are angry or freaked out over the whole Big Brother mentality, it is ironic that a large percentage of those same people are willing to put it all out there for virtually anyone to see.
Aside from the dangers of too much personal information, business people need to realize that too much information on anything can be damaging. In this case, I’m referring to individuals and companies that spend a great deal of time and money on perfecting a website and then use social marketing as a tell-all, tossing discretion and professionalism out the window.
More and more people will begin to see seminars, webinars and workshops popping up on the topic of the effective use of social marketing. In fact, the PRSA has a free upcoming webinar based on this very topic. The event titled, “Don’t Be Faceless: Learn 7 Essential Social Media Techniques for PR Success,” is scheduled to be held on Wednesday, January 14 from 3–4 P.M. EST.
