Sundance Relations …

Tuesday, January 30th, 2007

I recently had the honor of attending the Sundance Film Festival in Park City Utah last week. It was an amazing experience, especially from the perspective of a PR professional. This event is an opportunity for usually small, independent, film-makers to show off their talents to an audience with the hopes of a large studio picking-up their film for larger distribution. The media, of course, is crawling all over this small ski resort town with note-takers in the audience and critic screenings alongside almost every film.

Mark your calendars: RSA 2007 sneaks in a week earlier …

The hottest tradeshow in IT security is just around the corner (February 5th-9th) and like every year SS|PR is able to assist numerous new clients in their quest for prominent visibility. Our clients have made it easy for us with some really cool stuff – from password defense to high-end forensics, email anti-theft, even open-sourced protection will makes its debut at this year. We again also have several clients up for specific honors during the SC Magazine sponsored Awards Dinner.

Personally, this will be my 7th year attending the show and I am excited to witness the continued evolution of not only the event itself but the industry as whole. Larry Ellison and Bill Gates make their usual appearances but also expect a new keynote delivered by none other than Former Secretary of State Colin Powell.

Lack of Computer Security sends Sub to Jail…

Tuesday, January 23rd, 2007

SS|PR deals with a lot of clients in the security industry, but rarely do we see security (or should I say lack of security) affect people in such a negative way.

One of my clients, Alex Eckelberry of Sunbelt Software- (SunbeltBlog) has come to the defense of Connecticut substitue teacher, Julie Amero, who has been found guilty of surfing for pornographic pictures in front of her 7th grade class. (Sentencing is March 2nd)

What her defense attorneys seemed to overlook was the possibility of a vicious spyware infestation. She is facing 40 year behind bars. Could this happen to you?

Sunbelt Software wants to help standardize a forensic process that looks at spyware infestations in an effort to prevent innocent people from being convicted. Alex has offered his technical team to Julie’s defense.

We wish Julie the best of luck in her case!

CES 2007 Recap

Monday, January 22nd, 2007

CES 2007 was another great success for many of SSPR’s clients. The show was jammed packed with innovation. Some of the themes that emerged from the noise were…

  1. Convergence- Convergence seems to be a theme every year. A few years ago it was the convergence of the home theater and the PC. This year it is the convergence of all things to the mobile device. Apple not to be trumped by the new CES show dates launched the iphone. I had inaccurately predicted that the move of CES to the 2nd week of January would be the death of MacWorld. Boy was I wrong! I sat on the grassy knoll out in front of the LVCC and listened to a Forbes reporter talk about the iphone with a colleague. They were discussing the irony of how this announcement was the biggest news at CES. The test now will be the delivery. Will the iphone live up to the hype? Will it really be ready in 6 months? What will be the impact for other convergent devices? We will all have to wait and see.
  2. LCDs- The LCD is getting bigger, and the technology is getting better. I was surprised at the number of companies touting high quality, big screen LCDs. They really are ready to compete with the Plasma market. One of our clients, SVA, launched a line of great quality LCDs with Sylvania. I don’t manage this account, but stopped by and was really impressed with what I saw.
  3. Gadgets- What would CES be without gadgets? 80% of the widgets and gizmos I saw one could easily live without, but there were a few real winners. One of our clients, Radiospire is the technology behind Philips new wireless HDMI. It is truly amazing what they are delivering. It is HDMI connectivity wirelessly. So now that plasma above the fireplace doesn’t need to have holes drilled into the wall and secret compartments to hide Tivos, DVD players etc. They can now be where you want them and transmitting the data wirelessly without negative impact on the image quality. Pretty cool stuff.

Overall the show was great. There did seem to be a lot more “buddies” making a week of it in Vegas to see the hot new stuff, but that too can be good. Buzz at the grass roots level never hurts!
