Sundance Relations …

I recently had the honor of attending the Sundance Film Festival in Park City Utah last week. It was an amazing experience, especially from the perspective of a PR professional. This event is an opportunity for usually small, independent, film-makers to show off their talents to an audience with the hopes of a large studio picking-up their film for larger distribution. The media, of course, is crawling all over this small ski resort town with note-takers in the audience and critic screenings alongside almost every film.

Sundance is essentially a large PR event in which these film makers are given an opportunity to tell their story - this was amazing to see another perspective of my industry. We attended the second weekend of the festival and by this time the celebrities had gathered up their swag, escaped the bitter cold of Park City and eventually fallen back to the comfort of their Hollywood homes under the sun. What was left behind was the beauty of what makes this event special - these filmmakers in many ways mirror our clients at SS|PR; they are great at what they do but only a small portion of the public is even aware of their talents.

They are given a small window to ‘show off their stuff,’ they have put their heart, soul and the majority of their time into reaching out to an audience they are convinced will embrace what they are offering. The sacrifice these filmmakers, as well as our clients, have made is staggering and enormously impressive. At the end of the day, some may not become stars but like our clients, if you have this much passion for your work, many will make it and its remarkable to observe this evolution in progress.

I anxiously await to see what next year’s event has in store for us …

Were you attending this event as a participant or a coordinator? I always find it interesting to attend events and sit back and analyze all of the PR that has been done, is being done and will be done for the event. It is interesting to think how you would handle certain situations and kind of test your own PR skills/ knowledge. Thanks for your post.
